Reflections and Gratitude: San Jose at the Close of 2025

Looking Back on 2025 in San Jose
As we approach the end of 2025, I find myself reflecting on what I have personally experienced in San Jose—my “adopted” hometown. The city has faced tremendous challenges, and at times, these obstacles have seemed nearly insurmountable.

Recognizing Dedication and Teamwork
While the details of these challenges are not necessary to recount here, what stands out most to me is the unwavering dedication of those who work tirelessly to keep San Jose, the “Capital of Silicon Valley,” a shining example of how a large, diverse city can unite to tackle present-day issues while continuing to build for the future.
This collective effort is not the result of a single decree or mandate. Instead, it is the thousands of devoted City of San Jose employees who take on difficult, often thankless jobs to make this one of the best places to live on Earth.

The Importance of Leadership
None of these accomplishments would be possible without effective leaders guiding every department across the City of San Jose. Their vision and management have been instrumental in driving progress.

Saluting Our Public Safety Heroes
Special recognition goes to the San Jose Fire Department, led by Chief Sapien, and the San Jose Police Department, under Chief Paul Joseph. With fewer than 2,000 active personnel, these departments perform the herculean task of maintaining San Jose’s reputation as the safest large city in the country—24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Appreciation for City Leadership
I would also like to acknowledge City Manager Jennifer Maquire, Mayor Matt Mahan, and the entire City Council. The challenges and constant demands for instant solutions inevitably mean that someone or some group will be disappointed. Nevertheless, when reviewing objective measures of progress, it is clear that real advancements are being made. I see it, I witness it, and I applaud the discipline and resolve displayed in keeping San Jose on track.

A Personal Commitment to San Jose’s Future
As an involved neighborhood leader, I pledge my personal support to continue working throughout 2026 to make my neighborhood safer, cleaner, and better prepared. I am committed to spreading this message throughout San Jose in hopes of inspiring others to join these efforts.

Why I Chose San Jose
Nearly fifty years ago, I made the decision to move from my hometown of Sacramento to San Jose to advance my career in Information Technology. What drew me to San Jose, rather than any other Bay Area city, was its status as a large city with a low crime rate, excellent schools, and abundant job opportunities.

Gratitude for a Community That Proves Its Worth
Thank you to everyone who has contributed to making San Jose a place that continually confirms I made the right decision all those years ago. Your hard work and dedication are deeply appreciated.
