The San Jose Police Department Financial Crimes and Burglary Unit has been made aware of a new scam in San José where scammers are impersonating law enforcement officers and government agencies, telling victims their money is at risk and instructing them to withdraw cash and purchase gold for “safekeeping” or as part of an “investigation.”
Law enforcement will NEVER:
Ask you to withdraw money from your bank account
Direct you to purchase gold, gift cards, or cryptocurrency
Send couriers to collect money or valuables
Threaten arrest if you do not comply immediately
If someone claiming to be law enforcement asks you to move money, buy gold, or surrender valuables, hang up and contact police.
If you believe you have been targeted by this scam, report it and call 408-277-8900 to file a police report.
As always, send any burglary investigation tips to SJPDFraudDetail@sanjoseca.gov
